What is a choice based art classroom like? You are expected to work independently within the class framework, we will explore a variety of content and art skills through workshop days. What am I expected to do? In Intro Art and the Advanced Arts courses you will choose your own project theme, art medium, research how to use the media, research your theme topic more in-depth, and follow the directions for basic use of those materials as you apply them to your own work. You will document your ideas, research, and practice in an online portfolio. You all have ideas to communicate, there is no endpoint to creativity and creative growth, find what inspires and effects you and explore those things, not superficially, but in-depth! Where are materials at? Materials are located at art medium centers around the room; drawing center, paper center, clay center, mixed media center, sculpture center, digital media center, and painting center. What about ideas, check out the 'inspiration station' to get ideas or to help develop your ideas more. How will class start and end? Each class will start with a 5-minute 'art start' where we will discuss an important art topic related to what we are doing or an important artist that is related to the types of artworks currently being made. NO RESTROOM BREAKS AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS, THIS HOLDS UP THE WHOLE CLASS FROM STARTING. Class will end with approx. 5-10 minutes for clean up, clean up time will vary depending upon the 'messiness' of the materials you are using. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF YOU AND YOUR CLASS TO CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF, SO THE NEXT CLASS HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO WORK JUST AS YOU DID. Many of you may be in an art class because you lend yourself more to learning as a visual and tactile learner (looking and touching/hands on); we often can learn a lot by simply watching others work, what techniques do they use, how do they go about doing this or that? I will also be working on my own artworks during class so students can observe technique, processes, and new ways of approaching work; if you need help ask a peer...then ask the teacher. Just like in most jobs, you will usually ask a co-worker how to do something before you go and find your boss and ask them how to do something. I will also be observing you, your current skills set, and how you are attempting to grow/get better. Never be afraid to ask for help! |

The art department at Sheldon High School teaches students the fundamental skills required to be successful in a range of art media, processes, and technology. Students will experiment in and learn to use 2D, 3D, and technological art making tools while building a solid foundation of art practices and behaviors. Students will learn, practice, and use the Harvard University 'Studio Habits of Mind' Art Framework (teaching students how to think creatively and problem solve). The art department will strive to help students improve their creative problem solving skills, to develop interpersonal communication skills, to grow the student's ability to reflect and respond to their environment, to utilize relevant technologies in appropriate and in innovative ways, and to foster grit and independent thinking. Fundamental skills students will master include a deep understanding of art tool usage, fine arts technologies, as well as applications of the elements and principles of art. |
