Why Write Artist Statements?
By the end of this lesson: I can describe how an artist statement can impact a viewers perception of an artwork. I can describe how an artist statement can provide context which will allow me to better understand the world of art and varying cultures. |
Discussion Activity:
Read the art statement about the work of Louise Bourgeois, a sculptor. Does an artist statement alter how you perceive a work of art? Does it alter it's value? Do we learn anything about who the artist is or what culture or group they came from if we have an artist statement to read while we also view their work? |
What is an Artist Statement?
|
1. A short piece of informative writing by the artist.
2. A way for the artist to explain their process and vision for their work. 3. Helps the viewer understand why you made what you did and why. 4. Gives the viewer insight into your artistic style (perhaps your whole body of work). 5. It is NOT a reflection on your feelings about the success of your work. |
